Established in 1998 and funded by the Government of Sharjah (UAE), the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture has been awarded every year to two winners (individuals, groups or institutions) who have helped – through their work and their outstanding achievements – to disseminate a better understanding of Arab art and culture.

Candidates must have contributed significantly to the development, dissemination and promotion of Arab culture in the world. They should benefit from an international reputation in their field and have distinguished themselves by meritorious deeds for several years.

The winners are selected by the Director-General of UNESCO, on the recommendation of an international jury of experts. Thus actively contributing toward the promotion of cultural dialogue and revitalization of Arab culture.
