Abstract: How does ethnography help us understand social reality in the Arab region today?

This roundtable introduces the recently published special issue entitled, “Ethnography as Knowledge in the Arab Region” in Contemporary Levant (Volume 2, Issue 1), proposing a discussion on a) what preoccupies the ethnographer of this region today, and b) what attention to ethnographic experience can tell us about the conditions that come to bear upon informants and researchers alike, in significant and sometimes unavoidable ways. Following presentations by contributors to the issue and input from guest commentators, we welcome a conversation and reflection on the interplay between methodology and knowing in the field, suggesting ethnographic attention to the overbearing conditions of the field as entry point to understanding prevailing social reality across the Arab region today (and beyond).
