Still Lives is a series of drawings gathered in a book. They speak of the time spent after sharing lunches or dinners, around coffee, cigarettes and drinks, when leftovers remain on tables, conversations continue, and time is extended. These drawings document mundane situations, where the intimate often echoes the larger state of affairs.
مشاهد صامتة سلسلة من الرسوم، يضمّها كتاب، وتحكي عن الوقت الذي نمضيه بعد مشاطرة الطعام، أو اثناء التدخين أو احتساء القهوة أو المشروبات، حينما تكسو الطاولة بقايا الطعام والشراب، فتستأنف الأحاديث، ويمتد بنا الوقت. توثّق هذه الرسوم لحالات بسيطة، يردد فيها الحميمي صدى أحوال أوسع، تشمل أمورا ووقائع أخرى.
I believe Bin Laden. Especially when he says - with no remorse, of course - that he did not expect the extent of the damage that resulted from the collision of the two airplanes with the twin towers of the World Trade Center. We must allot something to the gods, fate or chance in this case: that something unexpected to the planners, the executors, the victims and even the spectators happened.
أصدّق بن لادن. خاصة حين يقول، غير آسف بالطبع، إنه لم يكن يتوقع حجم الدمار الذي تأتّى من اصطدام الطائرتين ببرجي مركز التجارة. علينا أن ندع شيئا للآلهة أو القدر أو الحظّ في هذا الأمر: أن يحدث شيئ ليس في توقّع المخطّطين ولا المنفذين ولا الضحايا ولا حتى المتفرّجين.
The story begins as follows: On a day just like the days that preceded it, and by pure chance, one of the city’s inhabitants invented a very pretty machine. This machine made a very soft hum, almost hypnotic, and had the capacity to disproportionately intensify emotions. A pretty hate-machine, a pretty love-machine. As one can easily guess, the invention of such a machine had to have dire consequences, and indeed it did: After all the inhabitants acquired the machine, a terrible war ravaged their city.
تبدأ القصة كالتالي: ذات يوم يشبه تماما الأيام التي سبقته، وبمحض الصدفة، اخترع أحد سكان المدينة آلة جميلة جدا. كانت هذه الآلة تصدر دندنة ناعمة للغاية، شبه تخديرية، ولديها القدرة على تكثيف المشاعر بطريقة لا متناسقة. آلة جميلة للحب، آلة جميلة للكراهية. كان لا بدّ، كما يمكن أن يحدس المرء بسهولة، من أن يؤدّي اختراع آلة كهذه إلى عواقب كوارثية. وهذا ما كان حقا: فبعد أن حصل كل السكان على الآلة خربّت حرب رهيبة المدينة.

This book considers the difficult and complex relations imposed by globalization on those seeking membership. As a cultural, moral and economical authority, globalization requires a meticulous screening of its applications. In passing its entrance examination, one is not allotted social promotion as within class struggles of previous eras. With globalization, membership promises a radical promotion of one’s being. For as a project, it claims to circumscribe and define all of what falls within the purview of “human activity”. The unfortunates who do not pass the test are left to loiter in the invisibility of its margins, only to be expelled from the human species.
يتناول هذا الكتاب العلاقة الشائكة والمعقدة التي تفرضها مفاعيل العولمة على الداخلين في كنفها الوثير. وحيث أن العولمة كسلطة ثقافية ومعنوية واقتصادية لا يمكن مجابهتها أو الإنصراف عنها وتجاهلها في سهولة، تبدو التقنيات المعقدة التي تفرضها على الداخلين إلى كنفها وكأنها نوع من الإمتحان الثقافي والإقتصادي والإجتماعي يتوجب على المرء اجتيازه ليتمكن من الدخول في عالمها الوثير والمتسع. لكن الإمتحان في هذه الحال لا يتعلق بالترقي الإجتماعي الذي كان يمثله الإرتقاء في درجات التعليم في العقود التي سبقت انتشار مفاعيل العولمة، حيث يرتفع المرء في طبقته لكنه لا يرتفع في جنسه وكينونته. لأن العولمة تجهد لحصر وجود الإنسان الحديث في نطاقها ورفض ما يتخلف عنه واهماله تمهيدا لإخراجه من الجنس البشري برمته.

He is the New Killer. With the suicide killer, notions are overturned. Death – avoid it if possible; try and control it; at the very least, defer it – without the fear of death as an idea, the evolution, progress and prosperity of humanity would never have come about. Yet, it is this very death that the suicide killer seems to sing.
إنه القاتل الجديد. مع الإنتحاري تنقلب المفاهيم. فالموت، الذي لم تنمُ البشرية، وتزدهر، وتتطور سوى على فكرة الخوف منه، وتجنبه ما أمكن، ومحاولة السيطرة عليه، او تأجيله على أقل تقدير، هو الموت نفسه الذي يبدو أن الإنتحاري أكثر ما ينشده.

Four combatants recount chapters from the Lebanese wars through the battles they fought and still do, weaving thus part of the networks of political and military alliances and conflicts among Lebanese parties–as well as the various other organizations operating on Lebanese territories–in whose wars the four imaginary fighters valiantly fought, and whose politics and ideological goals they valiantly defended.
لكم تمنّت نانسي أنّ كل ما حدث لم يكن سوى كذبة نيسان يقدم أربعة مقاتلين جالسين على كنبة في وسط المسرح، يروون فصولاً من الحروب اللبنانية من خلال المعارك التي خاضوها على مدى سنوات ولا يزالون. خلال السرد، تنطلق كل شخصية من تجربتها الخاصة في الحرب، وانتمائها الحزبي والأيديولوجي ... ناسجةً بذلك جزءاً من شبكة الصراعات، والتحالفات السياسية والعسكرية للأحزاب والتنظيمات على الأراضي اللبنانية.

هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن مراجعة نقدية لكتاب العراق/الطبقات الاجتماعية والحركات الثورية من العهد العثماني إلى قيام الجمهورية (1978)، للكاتب الفلسطيني حنّا بطاطو 1926-2000)). يأتي هذا الكتاب تجاوباً مع التطورات العامة والاجتماعية في العالم العربي منذ مطلع العقد الأول من القرن الواحد والعشرين. والعراق، في مرآة المؤرخ الراحل بطاطو، هو نقطة انطلاق ومثال لتحوّلات على صعيد مفهومي الدولة والمجتمع.
هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن قصص تبدأ في العام 1981 وتنتهي في 2008. تدور أحداث هذه القصص في أحياء ومناطق بيروتيّة عدة، فتلتحم بعناصر بشريّة ومكانيّة كثيفة الارتباط والتفاعل، ما يحيل السرد فيها إلى الكتابة الروائيّة السوسيولوجيّة والتحليليّة. فادي طفيلي، كاتب وشاعر ومترجم لبناني. رئيس تحرير مجلّة البوّابة التّاسعة وأحد مؤسسيها. نشر كتاباته منذ مطلع التسعينيّات في مطبوعات وصحف لبنانيّة عدّة. له ثلاث مجموعات شعريّة، كما ترجم عدّة أعمال في الميثيولوجيا والأدب.
The City Outside the Sentence fictionalizes moments of translation and momentary suspensions in which words, sentences, and writing itself become characters in a story. Pronunciation glitches, thwarted accents, and makeshift multilingualism are turned into narrative possibilities. Written between 2013 and 2015, these short stories portray the body as both producer and recipient of language.
Beirut’s new high-rise buildings weave the most recent panel of a giant curtain obstructing the view of the sea to one side, and of the mountains to the other. This panel connects to several others that have been emerging from scattered locations one after the other since the early 1970s and perhaps even the 1960s, and proliferating in tandem and as if in cahoots to erect a barricade between the city, its streets and residents, and its sea and coast. Resultantly, unless one happens to live in one of the buildings forming the curtain panels, one is no longer able to catch sight of the sea, even from a distance. Nor does it help if one’s building were located at the higher end of the hills that surround Beirut’s basin and overlook its narrow plain between the river’s mouth to the north and east (corresponding roughly to Gemmayzeh and Rmeil) or to the south and west, the fishing port, and the foot of the old lighthouse (stretching, at best, to Ramlet el Bayda). The blocking of the sea by two sequential curtains of tall buildings that spread throughout the folds of Beirut contradicts the inhabitants’ understanding of the city as well as denies and infringes on the vision of its implicit expansion. This blockade turns on Beirut’s’ environmental foundations as well as its relationship with the elements and landscape from which its theaters and rhythms arose.
تسدل المباني العالية الجديدة في أنحاء بيروت جزء اً جديداً من حاجز هائل على البحر وآخر على الجبل. ويصل الجزء هذا بأجزاء كثيرة تخرج تباعاً من أماكن مبعثرة، منذ أوائل سبعينيات القرن الماضي، وربما قبلها بعقد من السنين. وتتضافر، وكأنها متواعدة ومتواطئة، على رفع حاجز يحجز بين المدينة، وأحيائها وشوارعها وأهلها، وبين بحرها وشاطئها. فإذا لم يقم الواحد في شقة من شقق المباني التي يأتلف منها الحاجز تباعاً، استحال عليه استقبال البحر ولو من بعيد. ولم يسعفه قيام المبنى الذي يسكن إحدى شققه في موضع مرتفع من التلال المحيطة بقصعة بيروت، والمطلة على سهلها الضيق بين مصب النهر شمالاً وشرقاً (أو الجميزة والرميل، تقريباً) وبين جل البحر وسفح المنارة القديمة جنوباً وغرباً (وصولاً إلى الرملة البيضاء تبعيداً وسدّ البحر بحاجزين متسلسلين من المباني العالية والمنتشرة في ثنايا بيروت يخالف معنى المدينة الذي يفهمه أهلها، وينكره وينتهك رسم توسعها المضمر، وينقلب على اركانها البيئية وعلاقاتها بالعناصر والتضاريس التي نشأت عنها مسارحها وإيقاعاتها
The Spared Ones is a sequence of potential images for a cinematic essay. The texts, both connected and disconnected, are derived from reality and beyond. Comprised of shared – often involuntarily so – anectodes of worlds inhabited by stray dogs, dragons and other untamed monsters, The Spared Ones is an essay on fears. Its incompletion reveals the possible images of a film to come.
اللغة وشبكات التواصل الاجتماعي: تحوّل العامّيات العربية إلى لغاتٍ مكتوبة ومستقبل الفصحى؛ شبكات التواصل بما هي معرض مترامي الأطراف وضعيف الضوابط لمستويات اللغة ولوجه استعمالها؛ الكتابة بالعامّية: من السيناريو والرواية إلى الفيسبوك وتويتر: ما الجديد؟ وضع المعاجم العربية في ضوء ما أظهره العالم الافتراضي من تغيير في التوزيع الاستعمالي لمستويات اللغة بين الكتابة والمشافهة: هل توضع (أو تجدّد) معاجمُ للعامّيات؟ هل يشير شيوع كتابة العربية بحروفٍ لاتينية مطوّعة على الشبكات الاجتماعية إلى اتّجاهٍ يمكن أن يفرض نفسه؟ هل يمكن القيام بحصرٍ أوّلي للمشكلات التي أظهرتها الشبكات الاجتماعية في كفاءة العربية للتعبير عن أمور مختلفة؟ ما حال السلطة اللغوية في المجال العربي؟ وكيف ستكون العلاقة التي تظهر تباشيرها على شبكات التواصل بين العربية وعامّياتها ولغة العولمة الأولى؟ ما الذي تطرحه العولمة من تحدّياتٍ لغوية واصطلاحية؟ هل تشجّع شبكاتُ التواصل الشعورَ بهويّةٍ عربية جامعة أساسها اللغة؟
